Europa Uomo, the European prostate coalition, represents patient groups from 23 European countries.

In Europe more than 3.000.000 men live with prostate cancer , 300.000 men learn each year that they have the disease and more than 68.000 die of prostate cancer. A burden to society that increases each year mainly due to the ageing of our society.

The diagnosis, usually in a middle-aged male, installs panic in the newly diagnosed patient fearing not only for his life but also for the quality of his remaining life. The patient feels lost and the overload of information in this digital age, the medical labyrinth, the so-called evidence based medicine and the lack of clear outcomes of treatment contribute to the panic and loss of personality.

Rushing to the internet is no help. Prostate cancer nets more than 12 million hits in Google and finds 1896 randomised trials to answer uncertainties in diagnosis and treatment. The easiest way to get out of the confusion is a partnership with the professional societies. To find the answer to the optimal medical treatment based on multiprofessional collaboration and evidence based medicine we rely on info and education from the European Association of Urology (EAU). Europa Uomo has a network of international partnerships to ensure a top level of updated, reliable and objective information.

The other side of medical management involves patient-centered care based on shared care with professional bodies (specialists, general practitioners, nursing) to provide holistic care to the individual patient in social, emotional, financial and spiritual needs.

This strategy has been supported by health authorities and professional bodies. This awareness is geared to 'The patient first' (and then his cancer) as proposed by the European commissioner for health, J. Dalli, during his presentation of the European Partnership Action Against Cancer (EPAAC) in 2010.

Europa Uomo accepted its responsibility in this endeavor by:

  1. Creating a cheap (e-mail) network on divulging reliable information through its organization.
  2. Support equal quality of medical treatment for all European citizens (cross border treatment)
  3. Sharing best clinical practice and go for expert units of prostate cancer care
  4. Support optimal medical treatment as well as translational and basic research (vote EP.0080/120)
  5. See a doctor-patient relation in mutual respect

Last but not least our collaboration with the media. We realize the media problems in dealing with complex issues as cancer to bring it in simple words with a maximum of hype. Cancer will not be cured by a quantum leap but by thousands small steps of research. However we are grateful and let it be known that we support the ESO nominations for its 6th Annual Best Cancer Reporter Awards (10 & 5.000 Euro - deadline April 29, 2011) (
